how modern is the septic???

Just wanted to follow up on this to see if anyone had any input?

Thanks Ken I just read one of your other post in regards to a dappled willow and how it couldn't penetrate modern pvc.

BUT does anyone know if my tree will survive with standing water. We have been getting daily rain here in the Chicago area and this tree is planted near my sump pump discharge line. The standing water you see in the picture has been there for 4 days now.

You should replant the willow on a mound or lower the soil around it. Even willows need to breathe to be their healthiest.

whether or not.. a mature ... ESTABLISHED .. plant can deal with water ... really has nothing to do with a transplant ...

its the transplant.. and the tranplanter .. that cause the problems... leading to the plant fighting to get ESTABLISHED ...

see link... it has a very good discourse on dealing with clay ... which involves planting half the root mass in native muck .. and half elevated .. and mounded ..

there is nothing inherent bad about growing in clay ... its really all about water management ... and right now.. you cant maintain the water properly ... and therein lies the rub ....

the simple answer is.. roots need air.. as much as moisture ... both must move in and out of the soil ... else.. you grow bog plants ....

Thanks so much for the guidance!! I also planted two dappled willow shrubs before this tree near the sump pump discharge line and the nursery said it would thrive with so much water.

Thanks for the link Ken. I'll replant it with a mound like structure to give the roots more air.

Last question should the root ball be 50% raised on this mound?

I contend modern septic tanks have a similar number of holes in their laterals to let out water/jack as older ones. These have to INVITE all damp loving trees to send in roots.

Now the tanks and pipes leading to them are considerably more advanced. U still can't go flushing whatever u want but they are solidly built.

After watching time fly and trees come and go I have decided normal trees should not have septic fields under their drip lines. The tank may be safer to put there if you must. Your willow I am not familiar with. A weeping willow probably belongs further away.
