Is My Maple Dead?

I have this natural maple about 30' tall and probably 15-20 years old. It was doing great until this year, no leaf out in the spring. There are some new leafs starting to emerge on the trunk, but the branches are barren except for what look like old leaf stems. Any idea what happened (no obvious borer signs and other maples feet away are fine)? Can this tree be salvaged in any way (probably stupid question)? Thanks all!

Perhaps some spring frost got to the buds?

I would wait until later this summer see if any new buds form out on the branch tips.

If not it will probably live but have a strange shape.

Is it in the woods or the middle of your yard?

It's on the side of my property surrounded by a row of pines, I thought perhaps the pines prevented the roots from getting water, but that seems unlikely, still very strange that only this tree has suffered this fate.

Usually when an established tree doesn't leaf out, it is dying and almost gone. Generally there are things going on in the trunk that you may not have noticed, and perhaps there were signs in the past few seasons that it wasn't doing well, but they were subtle and missed.
