| I planted two Japanese Maple's 3-4 Months ago. They seemed to be doing OK until recently. One is planted in the middle of a grass area and the other in a non-grass area. I live in the Northern CA and the trees get morning shade and sun/heat for the entire afternoon. Temps range from 70-100 and there are often winds in the afternoon.
Both have different symptoms: 1. The tree in the grass is losing leaves and they are curling and drying up, but doesn't seem to have any burn marks.
Pictures of both trees can be found here:

| I honestly don't think they look too bad. Some of the JM I have planted in the past do the same thing the first year, but I am not a tree guy. Sense nobody has posted, the first thing that comes to mind with burnt tips is over fertilization. I am guessing you planted them well sometimes tips dry up when the rootball is potbound and not replanted right though I am sure you have that probably covered though the bed is pretty small. What varity is that maple? It looks similar to bloodgood and generally they are fairly hardy here and I would think great for Ncali, hope that helps more, hopefully somebody like bboy will chime in. |

| Gut says leaf scorch for both, just from the hot and windy conditions you describe. I'm guessing this is inland Cali? Just make sure they are well watered. I'm assuming your yard is irrigated already. A little extra moisture wouldn't hurt as long as they're not saturated. Remember, in a place with "normal" rainfall (i.e., the East) you need to water them regularly after transplat... on TOP of the natural rainfall. |
