will this black cherry tree be okay for a treehouse?

I have 3 nicely spaced, mature trees just right for a treehouse to perch between. One is a black cherry that looked perfect, until I looked closely. It has these (insect? bird?) bore holes all over. Is this tree doomed? It looks very healthy with a nice canopy.

I've got lots of trees, unfortunately mostly ash, and I don't want to build a tree house in an ash tree. And all the other trees don't seem to want to align properly for a tree house.

Thanks

Maybe sapsucker holes, which won't necessarily kill the tree. But I'd think that since these are cherries you'd have to watch you didn't damage them building the house in such a way that they went south and were no longer suitable. Cherries are one of those kinds that has a lower tolerance for mechanical injury than some others.

i have lived this quandary ...

and came to the conclusion .... that i could not crucify a tree [driving multiple large spikes into it] .. for the price a four 4 by 4's.. or 4 x 6's ...

just go buy the lumber.. and leave the trees be ...

besides the fact.. that the kids will lose interest in the tree house in 10 years ... and you can get rid of it..

instead of spending the next 2 or 3 decades.. wondering what harm you did to the tree ...

Can you build the tree house on post between the trees to make it look like it is attached to the trees.

Not to mention, black cherry is very valuable wood. And you appear to have three pretty nice black cherries!

Thanks for your replies. Bboy, thanks for letting me know this is sapsucker damage. I googled it and learned a lot, such as it will probably not harm this mature tree. And compared to some of the sapsucker damage images I saw, my tree is fine!

The kids may outgrow the tree in 10 years, but I won't! (just a big kid myself)

Knuttle, I like your idea of putting posts by the trunk, so it appears to be in the trees, will talk the my husband about that.

Appreciate your help folks!

you may find it very hard.. to dig 4 holes.. on square.. very close to a large tree.. without finding large roots ...

Tree house?

No.

Build a free standing elevated play house near some lower value tree if you must.

However, my opinion of treehouses/play houses is that they teach vanity and dominionism.
