toronado, I have been watering since Late April-Early May, trying to keep even our established trees as stress free as possible to encourage more growth for shade. We have had 14.48" on the year, which is 10"+ below normal on the year. Plus, 4"+ of the 14.48" came in one week of March, and another 2"+ in one day June 3rd. So realistically, there has been about 9" effective rainfall for the year. Our average annual is 48.22" rainfall. Don't think we are going to see that. On the silver lining side, dead trees should rot REALLY slowly, and cars should not rust much. Arktrees

Opuntia humifisa, native to most states of the union. It should flower yellow flowers in mid-June. You might be surprised to know that there are at least 20 species that survive the winter here (and in StL) if you can keep them dry when temps are cold. There are several genera that will grow for you, including some small round ones like Escobaria missouriensis (it grows all the way north to ND). We've been spared your incessant heat so far here in PA. I watered my new trees for only the second time today, but with 90+ predicted for the next few days, I'll keep the watering can handy.

You are so lucky. We never get any decent rain around here. I water my new trees for an hour, each one, full hose, every other day. I can't wait til they're established, because all this watering (I have sandy soil, it holds NO water) is so time consuming. It's seriously cramping my style. It's way more than I bargained for! I water half the trees (10) one day and the other half (10)the next day. Thank God we have a well. I can't imagine the water bill for this much usage.

ilovemytrees, If I were you, I would invest in some timers and sprinklers. What I have done. Set the sprinkler, set the timer, walk away. Another option would be drip lines that you could run just underground (out of sight except at the trees) and put those on timers. Would be set, and walk away. Arktrees
