Inflated trunk measurements due to measuring at the wrong height have been published more than a few times, American Forests for instance. Speaking of them, have you compared with what is in National Register of Big Trees?

The national champion Quercus velutina is 436 points. Dax's tree is 297 points. Even if Dax hadn't thought to check, I bet he showed his tree (or findings) to Guy, and I know Guy would have said something if it were in contention to be a champion.

The Illinois champion Quercus velutina, BTW, is 328 points (if that info is still current).

I must say, this time of year is best for identifying these trees from afar. The combination of yellow/green/brown leaves really sets off the dark/black bark! The picture above doesn't look nearly as black as some in my side of the country...although the ones I saw are smaller.

Really nice tree! How do you measure height? Is there an easy way, not this ruler step here do this do that crap. There is a Shingle oak that is super huge that I want to measure and it's on a slight slope and I want to nominate it and can't get the height. The girth is hard enough, it's kind of up on mounded earth, plus the roots are up sort of. I will take a picture of it and some time before I die I'll learn to post pics! How can you ID a black oak from a red when it has baby bark? I have a tree that is different from my red oaks but isn't like the Shumards, nuttals. cherrybarks and scarlets.

Thanks Brandon for posting, I'm gonna prices those clinometers, the instructions read simple but without seeing in person people doing it, the steps make no sense, they're kind of contradictory. The gadget will be used alot anyway.
