Old catalpa tree

A huge catalpa on our property must come down due to many dead branches and some rotting issues.

The trunk is huge and I'd like to save a slice of it to make a table. Will this work?

Also, is it possible to estimate the age of the tree by its circumference?

Many thanks to all of you other tree lovers.

after a slice is cut.. you would count the rings of growth ...

you might want to talk to a local furniture maker.. or lumber store [not big box] .. or sawmill ... to do it right ...

you can easily make the table.. the issue is how to dry it.. without it cracking severely ...

or try googling something like: how to dry a thick slice of freshcut wood ...

check out the link ...

Catalpa has gained a certain popularity over the last few years as a carving wood for wood sculptures.
Not sure exactly why, but apparently it has some good characteristics.

Thanks for the comments. I know I'd count the rings after it's cut, but I thought I read somewhere once that you could estimate age by circumference. It's about 12 feet in circumference and 5 feet across at the base.

You can make only very general inferences about a tree's age relative to circumference due to widely varying growing conditions. Only counting the rings will really tell, and even then, the core of the pith will be hard to count as the rings there will be tiny and hard to make out. But you can get close.

An example: We once took down a very large swamp white oak in one of our parks. It had been struck by lightening and in this case, killed outright. When we dropped the stub, we counted the rings. By the time we were into the oldest core section where we couldn't make out rings anymore, we were already over 300.
