Swampy Area Developing

Cupcacious1

Hi, All! Newbie here. I'm looking for insight and advice regarding the wooded area in the rear of our property. Over the past several years, the area has had more and more standing water every spring. We have even been getting ducks setting up camp. There has also been an obvious shift in the soil line, leaving previously covered roots exposed. Naturally, we have lost several (6-7) mature red oaks, and numerous other smaller trees and shrubs.

My questions are these:

1) What are some probable causes for the ever-DEcreasing drainage in the area? Is it more likely a soil issue, a 'lack of enough trees to drink up the water' issue, or other combination of culprits? Perhaps only coincidentally, problems seemed to begin a few seasons after a neighbor cleared his wooded lot of trees.

2) What are some steps that could be taken to prevent further tree die off?

3) Will replacing trees help the situation or just likely result in newly planted, dead trees?

We're very fond of this wooded area and prefer to not have to turn it into a pond, if it can be helped. Any comments are bound to be helpful and appreciated.

Thanks!
