How to get rid of this...

Hi,

My neighbor has this big tree is his backyard, please see the picture. I don't know the name and if you do know please let me know.

I see this plant everywhere in my backyard. Today I realized that the root from his tree is all over my yard and every few feet, a new tree is growing. This is just damaging the lawn and I get rid of it, in one place, they start showing up elsewhere within few days.

Today, I removed like 25 feet of roots from my backyard. I cannot stand them anymore.

How can I get rid of this?

please help. thanks.

It looks like some kind of Sumac (Rhus). Looks significantly less hairy/fuzzy than the suckers from my cutleaf staghorn sumac, so maybe R. glabra (Smooth Sumac)?

Well, what ever kind of sumac it is, probably the best approach would be to take a sharp spade and insert as deeply as possible right at down your lot line near the origin of the tree and sever as many of the invading roots as possibly -- they should only be about 6" deep, so not hard to find and cut. Then, don't mow for a couple of weeks to allow the suckers to grow, and spray with a broadleaved herbicide for lawns. I may take several applications of herbicide to do them in. The best alternative would be to hand-dig the roots, but that, as you no doubt know, is labor intensive.

What would happen if he just sprayed Roundup (or its generic version) on them? That would kill the sucker & the underground portion, yes?

Wonder whether it'd get back to (& nail) the parent plant in the neighbor's yard, or not?

Richard.

IMO the tree is large enough to consider roundup on shoots as an annoyance and will continue to try and send them out over and over and over.
If roundup is all you use you will be using it forever.
If you sever the main root then you have a shot at roundup killing the shoots coming from what little root remains.

If it is a big tree, I wonder how big a sumac gets, or what a "big" tree is. Most Sumacs don't go over 25ft/7.5m. Could the tree be an Ailanthus? Do they grow from the roots? I wasn't aware of that, but they are so evil nothing would surprise me about them.

Round up accidentally on a sucker seems to have damaged my five foot parent tiger eyes sumac which was maybe ten feet away.

On the really negative side, round up will probably leave a dead circle in your grass.

i would agree with sumac. You see them on the side of the highway in huge bunchs maybe 10-20' high. I have them in my back yard. They are really not that big a deal - like raspberry suckers, a good lawn mowing will take care of that!

But since they spread by suckering, even if you sever the root, it will keep coming back if the parent is alive. Good news is they don't live very long, bad news is your neighbor might start another one from sucker.

Thank all.

It is Sumac, actually it is Staghorn Sumac. Thanks again. At least I know what it is now.

My neighbor is so lazy and he is been allowing these trees to grow. There are 5 big trees and 20 smaller ones in his yard and he is not doing anything about them.

Yesterday, I got weed killer and instead of spraying these suckers, I actually took the root out and inserted the root in the weed killer container. Today, I see three of them already dead in my yard.

I think, I will dig each root and just do that and hopefully they will stop.

if not, then I need to have a word with my neighbor.

Thanks.

sharafi, I am not a neighborhood dweller and situations like this are one reason why not. My perhaps paranoid self would be worried my neighbor would turn around and tell me to keep my bermuda or zoysia grass out of his yard.

Today the oak seedlings from both my and my neighbor's oaks were about four inches high. They are spread all over the front yard. I mowed today. They are all gone. If some have the strength to grow back the mower will get them.

Would it just be easier to mow the little fellas over?

I have two Tiger Eyes Sumac. Their suckers are all over the 20 foot flower bed they are in. Zero suckers are out in the grass three feet away. I blame/credit the mower.

My concern is the neighbor will tell you to remove your maple samaras from his yard. Or the sprouting acorns or something. Be nice, find the words I usually can't.

I to have a problem with these DEVIL trees!!! My landlords ex-wife planted some on the edge of my lawn years ago - they seemed to be sick (maybe bugs) this spring and I ask him if I could remove them. In his way of thinking... cutting them off 3 feet from the ground was good enough : ( Now they are spread out over 50+ feet of my lawn! I mow them off and they come back PINK! They have invaded every flower bed and have even started coming up in the drive way...

Sharafi - have you sprayed yours yet? if so, what brand did you use and did it work?

Marie

toronado, if these are coming up from the roots of the neighbor's trees, mowing will just be a minor irritation. They'll be right back unless the roots are killed.

Sharifi, you have my sympathies. I get golden rain trees from my neighbor's yard and am continually mowing, pulling them, and putting tree killer on the seedlings that come up in my yard and beds. Never-ending problem.
