Trees Cut Down Grew Back as Shrubs

Several trees we chopped down and sprayed with roundup (apparently not well enough) now are growing and they look like shrubs. The Purple leaf sand cherry tree looks quite pretty actually. Is this something to keep if I cut it back each year like a shrub or should I spray again and have it gone? Thanks so much..

This seems like more of a decision for you than for us. Many trees will grow back as multi-trunked trees when chopped down.

If you had the trees cut down to start with, why are you changing your mind now?

Brandon, The trees were not in the right place and they were not our choice of trees for our yard.. The "new look" if kept as a shrub would be fine for size. I never knew trees would do this so wondered if I should get rid of it before it becomes a problem. If it is something I can keep the size it is now by trimming then I would be delighted. Is this a common thing folks do. Never heard of it before.

I have seen Purple leaved sand cherry in shrub form in nurseries. I guess they were small trees which i thought were shrubs. I guess you learn something new everyday.

the label on RU states.. that as a stump killer.. it is used as 100% ... which is 41% ..

stump killing is NOT a spray thing..

and definitely not a pre-diluted spray thing ...

its up to you whether to keep them .. just keep in mind.. you have a mature root mass capable of supporting a large tree... it is not going to stay in small shrub shape very long ...

let us know when you really want to kill the stump .. if you ever come to that point in time...

Since we have beautiful evergreens in the area I think we will spray them again and have them gone. I did this last summer on a maple after it returned with suckers and I sprayed the green leaves and that was that. I don't think we used 100% roundup so will do that on the trunk this time. I think I will wait till its really hot out. Thanks again.

Triclopyr is more effective on woodies from a cut-and-paint application than is glyphosate.

That's not universally true. There are instances both ways and it depends on timing, type of plant, etc. Without pinning down specifics, I'd say either chemical has, on average, about an equal chance of working, when properly applied.

If you like the shrub look and don't the pruning, then you can keep them as shrubs, sure. Its just a matter of whether you want to deal with the pruning.
