Looks like a baby oak . But could very well be something else.

close enough to get you into a general idea of who the parents might have been ... but i cant do that for you ...

BUT!!!! .... most of them should probably go into the compost.... momma has to be somewhere close ... you will probably come to hate them ... lol ...

I have been finding shingle oak seedlings on my property for nearly three decades. I've never seen a parent yet. Those squirrels or chipmunks must travel some distance. Never knew what they were as seedlings, and one of them got hold and some size to it, hidden in a hedgerow and we left it to grow up. I had to post it here to find out what it was. LOL

I'm 90% sure it's some kind of oak, probably a red oak of some sort, but the leaves of juvenile oaks (as Ken said) look different than adults.

They don't look like my baby Scarlet oaks - which have leaves that look like adult Scarlet but with shallow lobes, but I've seen N. Red and Chinkapin oak seedlings and both look vaguely similar to what you posted.

The only way to really know is to wait a couple years.

I would say it is an oak of some kind. It looks different than my oak seedlings. Yours is more elongated than mine. I have 1 huge oak and 2 smaller ones in my front yard. They were here when we bought the property. We thought they would make good shade trees. 13 years later they make a lot of work. I am forever transplanting the seedling into the back wooded acre. Also removing many gallons of acorn out to the wooded area for seeding and deer. The nut on the tree root is the acorn.
