In round rock TX, planted two of these (red oak i think) about a year ago. Drought was hard on them, but they eventually grew leaves again even though i thought they were dead. A few months ago i noticed some strange........damage to the trunk on one, i have included pictures. I was thinking its that oak wilt thing, but i cant really tell what im looking at, it dosnt look exactly like any of the pictures if looked through, it has grown some, yet the leaves on the tree still appear healthy. The tree is leaking sap i guess, as everything below the damaged spot looks wet and it slightly sticky. there are also fresh cracks showing up lower in the truck that moisture is coming out of.......ideas anyone?

Yes, foliage appears fine. First of all, forget about oak wilt....this ain't that. What you've got there are cankers-serious lesions in the bark/cambium often caused by serious pathogens. The uppermost big wound though looks like it started as some kind of physical damage to the trunk. This then could have set the stage for invasion by the canker-causing organisms. Not a lot can be done. Also should add, drought itself can predispose certain species to canker problems. I'd guess that is part of the scenario here. +oM

thanks for the reply.......when you say 'not a lot can be done', does that mean the tree likely wont survive? these poor trees....first off the place we bought them from was rough with them, then they immediately experience record breaking summer heat for the area, and not enough water (mandated NO WATERING, though i still gave them some water)followed by a few freezes, and my back yard gets extremely windy for some reason so they've been whipped around like crazy. it took them a full month longer than all the other red oaks in my 'hood to start sprouting leaves.

d.girouard, sounds like a tough situation. What do you mean the place you bought them from was rough with them? Is fall planting any kinder in your location? At least then the new transplant does not have to maintain moisture to its leaves. It is easier to handle and plant smaller trees. Even can put three in an area and see which looks the strongest to keep. What grows natural out there? Here in St Louis we build in our floodplains like there is no other land in the world.

tornado, he put them in a cart (in pots) on the back of his golf cart, and they fell over and dragged on the ground part of the way, then let one fall over before he put it in our truck..... wish i would have done a bit of research before picking the trees, hindsight always 20/20 right. Wife decided she likes the leaves on these ones so its what we grabbed. The other tree may be ok, though there are two very tiny (half in long) splits on the trunk that are dark and wet.....hopefully at least one of them survives
