Young Oak Tree

An oak tree volunteered in my used to be butterfly garden about three years ago. The young tree has continuously grown and is now about 5+ feet tall. It is truly not in a good place because there is another maturer Ash tree growing in front of it.

I am wondering what the chances of survival of the oak tree would be if I had it dug up and replanted this fall. I had to have an dead oak tree cut down and would like to plant the young oak tree near that spot.

What do you think?

Why did the other oak tree die? Moving a new tree to where an old oak tree died could pose problems depending on how the old oak died.

I'm not an expert by any means, but my tree is dying due to Ganoderma, and my understanding is basically that soil area will be diseased in the future and it's inadvisable to plant a new tree of the same species there.

no reason it cant be done.. when it loses its leaves.. and is in dormancy ... bare root

though i would have preferred it have been done when it was around 3 feet ... just for less work.. and reduction of stress on the plant itself ...

pic below.. on what it should look like by the time you are done digging .. but do note.. the receiving hole should be dug first .... and it should spend no more time out of the ground.. than it takes to snap a pic ...

and forget about the tap root.. its just another root.. that needs to be cut.. to move the plant ....

ken

this happens to be a cherry.. but i have done oak the same way

RE: Young Oak Tree

U235, I truly don't know what the tree died of. Several of the same kind oak in my neighborhood died last year. I don't know if it was from the severe drought or not. I had not planned on putting a tree in the same spot, but a spot near the area.

Ken, thank you so much for the info and picture. I do wish I had moved it when it was about 3' tall, but I didn't have a place to plant it at this time. I was concerend about the tap root, but you have set my mind at ease concerning that.
