I have a 10 year old Prairie Fire Crabapple that the birds love. But one side has died. Bark and limbs are falling off. The other side has leaves, fruit and flowers. The dead side has a half dozen volunteer shoots coming out of the base. Can I cut half or all of the tree and let a volunteer become a new tree?

Yes, but if the sucker comes from below the graft union, it won't be Prairie Fire, it will be whatever the rootstock is.

I figured as much. So then I would end up with each half being 2 different trees. Maybe I should just get rid of it and buy something else. Thanks for the tip!

YES!!! get rid of it ... the understock. may not perform like the good part ... if you insist on another crab.. look for disease resistant varieties .. if this one isnt .. ken
