Good evening. I live in Ellensburg, WA and every place I have looked shows Ellensburg as being Zone 6. I recently planted 24 Leyland Cypress trees because I like the way they look, they are fast growing, and I needed a wind/privacy screen. I am now being told by local nurseries that we are actually in zone 5. I am wondering what to expect out of my leyland cypress trees because it now appears as though they were planted outside their growing zone. Will they die through the winter? Dead spots? I am 31 years old and in my lifetime the coldest it has gotten is -6 degrees. Any help is appreciated.

If I were you I would be comfortable with the zone 6 answer. If you haven't had lower than -6 in 31 years that is zone 6 to me. Google search for "hardiness zones" and it will show you the scale used to check for your zone. I would post a link for you but I don't know how.

your 31 years.. is insignificant in the realm of things.. to predict mother nature ... what will happen.. is that they will thrive.. until the one winter.. when it is z4.. or 5 ... and the next spring.. they will show severe damage.. if not total death ... and that is one of the basic reasons.. we do NOT plant a monoculture ... so that the whole is not wiped out... in one fell swoop ... if and when such happens.. you can fill back in with more cold tolerant things .... ken

Leyland cypress can grow anywhere within WA state. You should be fine. Rather than cold, I would be more concerned about keeping them adequately watered in your climate - that might be the limiting factor.

I have a drip line set up on a timer so water shouldn't really be much of a factor. My biggest concern is the cold but only because all of the local nurseries have told me we are in zone 5 (after I planted the leylands). All of the websites on plant hardiness I have found have shown that I am in zone 6. Thanks everyone for the quick replies and great info, I am glad that I found this site. Hopefully I will be able to answer questions for people or at least give someone good information in the future.

I live in Connecticut and have had leyland cypress at two of my homes here. They are fantastic and I really prefer them to arbor vitae. They fill in quickly and look beautiful. They absolutely do not like to have their feet wet. I have a hedge of 30 which I planted ten years ago. They were two feet tall upon planting, they are now about 25 feet tall except one which is in a wetter area and it is still only about six feet tall. They really hate wet feet. I have deer here and they have not eaten them. I can't say if they are deer resistant or not, but I have lost other plants to deer and not a bite on the leyland.
