Camphor Tree Dying?

Posted by tonyastro CA (My Page) on

This tree was planted 2 years ago. A few months ago I noticed there are a lot less leaves now and seem to be curling up and some are dying. Most of the branches are brown and brittle. Do Camphor trees do this during the summer? I deep water it 2x a week.

Here's a picture of the trunk if it matters.

OK. Do Camphor leaves shed or turn brown during the summer?

all the leaves are interior??? .. did you have any weird cold snap.. right when the leaves emerged????

sometimes superficial leaf damage.. doesnt 'show'.. until real summer heat hits ...

No weird cold snap. The leaves seem to be drying up from the inside. 1/4 of the branches are brown and break off easily. Hope it's not some disease.

I deep water 2x a week just because I read that Camphor tree roots rot with too much water.

Tony, did you ever find out what was ailing your Camphor? I have one in a large container (basically live in a parking lot :() that developed pin hole spots on its leaves, browned leaf margins and then tips of many new branches browning/ rotting. This seemed to start at end of excessive rains last year so I suspected root rot, but when I re-potted it, it didn't seem to have such. Now new growth is developing same symptoms.

I removed nearby Bermuda grass and watered every other day (which I hear is too often for Camphor trees) and the leaves look much better. They're not shriveled and pointing downwards anymore. However I haven't seen new leaves yet and most brown leaves have fallen so it looks really small.
