I have some volunteer silver maple weeds that keep popping up in the shade of two black walnuts. Every time I mow em down they just keep comin back up.

Silver maples on my street all lasted about fifty years so I bet yours are even better off.

100 feet is a safe distance....just don't use the walnut leaves or husks as mulch for your maple....good luck

Can't recall a Silver Maple, but I've seen Red, Sugar and Japanese Maples all completely happy being near or even under a Black Walnut.

Pretty certain silver maple is not bothered by juglone. Nor are sugar or red maple.

Juglone toxicity is really over-played. There are many, many trees and plants with compounds and/or allelopathic tendencies people plant without knowing or seeing any detrimental results. It would blow you away, and I'm posting a link to an article about species we discuss here all the time.

I have an ornamental garden UNDER my small grove of black walnut. One of my most expensive and rare magnolia cultivars and also a rare maple close to it. They're all thriving.

I moved a Japanese Maple below a large Black Walnut three years ago not knowing about the toxicity of the juglone until someone told me after it was planted. The tree is doing excellent. I also have a ~50' tall Silver maple within 50' of two large Black Walnuts and it's doing fine as well.

Re new plantings outside drip line of black walnut, I have lost a large japanese maple and two small ones. They appear fine for a year or so but then fail dramatically. I have lost three freemani maples (with silver maple parentage) after a couple of years. They grow very slowly or lose large portions of leaves. I believe the juglone weakens them and makes them prey to all sorts of fungus. I have many redbud, dogwood, fringe, zelkova, scarlet oak, plum, white pine, magnolia, and stewartia that are doing well. The black walnut I have on a half acre site is sixty feet tall with four foot caliper which makes a good test example. Hope this is helpful.
