Surprizing Sourwood Habitat

At least for me. Prior to last week, if someone had asked me about sourwood habitat in the wild I would have said, dry, upland hillsides, forest edges, fencerows, road cuts etc.
This pic was taken in Southeastern VA at the northern edge of the Great Dismal Swamp. Sourwood grows abundantly there along with countless species of Vaccinium, Gaylussacia, Myrica, Liquidambar, Acer rubrum, Zenobia, Persea, Cyrilla and in the shady parts carpets of Gelsemium. Also, some of the most beautiful, multi-stemmed specimens of Mag virginiana I've ever seen. In this area roads are not hardtopped. Sourwoods are commonly volunteering in the middle of the road, I drove over several of them :(
Is there something special or unique about this location? Why do we not usually associate sourwood with wetlands?
