Dwarf Alberta Spruce - dead or alive?

Hi. I have this tree in a container. I've had it about 2.5 years. I was planning to plant it in the ground when I noticed that a wren had a nest in it. That was a month ago. While the birds were growing, the tree was dying or so I thought. The birds have left the nest, and I planned to just get rid of the tree, thinking it was more dead than alive. It looks like this, except right side up (part two to follow):

However, when I looked at the tips, I discovered new growth (see pic). So, should I try planting it? Is there a reasonably good chance that it will recover and grow?

Well, you probably don't have much to lose at this point by trying to bring it back.

wow, I've never seen anybody accidentally quadruple-post! LOL! If there is new growth, it may be all right - Could've been heat, drought, cold, whatever. The answer lies in the roots, I would say.

"Well, you probably don't have much to lose at this point by trying to bring it back."

except for:
1. the lost opportunity to use the pot/space to grow something decent
2. a decent looking landscape that this unsightly waste of a plant precludes
3. all that wasted effort and concern squandered on this pitiful pain-in-the-neck
4. your reputation as a "green thumb", when your friends see this half-dead mess
5. the satisfaction you could receive by tossing this often-plagued plant in the trash!

LOL -- you have just sealed the doom of this poor little tree. Off to the compost heap it goes. I never knew DAS were so uniformly disliked.

Quadruple post. A new record.

That's OK, denninmi...there's been a gardenweb 'thing' going around of late. I discovered that I had posted 3 times to something in another forum not too long ago, lol. My posts have shown up twice a few times. This, after many years of never duplicating a post by accident.

I agree with brandon on this. Plus, I would add that this plant will hurt your spirit each and every time you look at it. Heck, it hurts my eyes just looking at the picture, lol.

RE: Dwarf Alberta Spruce - dead or alive?

of course it is disliked...it is popular and common. now make it a rare species or cultivar and you'll be inundated by oohs and aahs.

is it dead? no. it suffered from sunburn over the winter. the plant is prone to this.

would i keep it? unless there is a sentimental attachment, no. it's common, relatively cheap, no reason to keep it. if a gift from a beloved family member, the last gift from them before they tragically died, then i'd keep it.

and if you want to cememt your reputation as a green thumb, keep pics, plant in a lightly shaded situation...and in a couple years, few years, brag about how you brought this plant back from the brink. just be vague as.to what brink that was.

Quadruple post -- how does this happen?

 o
RE: Dwarf Alberta Spruce - dead or alive?

I've noticed a big increase in double posts. I wonder why that is?

Tree was a Home Depot special a couple years back. I have no affection whatsoever for big box stores, but as the proud owner of a money pit, I frequent them often (too often).

Thanks. The only thing cemented is the fate of this tree -- compost.

Hiya dedtired! :)

The multi-posts are probably server or software work going on behind the scenes, having the same thing lately at Live.com and they are forever messing with the servers/software.

Treat yourself to a new plant/tree to replace this one and you'll likely smile everytime you look at it, knowing you won't have to perform CPR just to get a pulse out of it. lol

I don't think that one person has mentioned that this plant is a spider mite magnet. Those little pests can do cause that kind of damage, too.

It's on the compost heap. I now have a nice empty pot for something else. Yay.

I don't think they are commonly disliked so much as commonly planted in the wrong spot, or in a container where they are liable to dry out. The back side shouldn't be readily viewable.
I used to have about ten that I started from cuttings. I've eliminated all but four over the years and that number will go down to three in a few days.
Not pictured is the one that's being eliminated.
