Red oak.

I was thinking red oak group-obviously-but not necessarily red oak. Most around here have deeper leaf sinuses and more gloss on the top surface than the one shown in the picture. Hill's oak perhaps? Is it a kind of scrubby oak tree, or can't you tell yet?

Yes, I wasn't completely sold on it but just went with it anyway.

Thanks, what does scrubby oak tree mean?

RE: Identification of Tree

Hill's oak (aka Northern Pin Oak) isn't necessarily "scrubby". The tree could also be a Black Oak (Quercus velutina), or even a hybrid between the 2 species. More photos of leaves & the whole tree would help.

That's likely a Northern Red Oak (Quercus rubra). Young Northern Red Oak trees or leaves that came from the shade are wide and have shallow leaf sinuses like that picture.

Looks like every small NRO Q Rubra I've ever seen too. The Q Velutina are more leathery. I just learned 2 of my NRO are actually Q Velutina. Texture of the leaf can help tell the difference. With Velutina kinda thickened. Fall color can too, NRO being the one too show some red color Q Velutina not too much at all.
