| this serviceberry was planted 1 year ago. I watered it religiously, but last summer it dropped all its leaves in July. I chalked it up to transplant shock.
this spring it barely bloomed. many dead branches. now it's dropping its leaves again. the root zone has been kept well watered. deep waterings 2+ times a week, with regular checks using a moisture probe and my own index finger. so I contacted the nursery that I bought it from. they claim it's fine, and just needs more watering. they refuse to replace it. any thoughts from you good folks???

| Ya know its been an odd spring and early summer and all but that sure isn't what a "fine" tree looks like around here. It may pull through but man. Perhaps their goal is for it to take long enough to die to be out of warranty. Gardenweb has great search.engine placement for google and the like. Tell your nursery either honor their warranty, quit telling people they offer a warranty or plant your "fine" serviceberry right at their entrance and leave it there for five years. Or else you put their name in this |

| the nursery is Ohana Farms in Marengo Illinois. http://ohana-farms.com/ they say their trees are "fresh dug to order" which is why I went with them. they also call their trees "Premium Grade" which is a farce, and he won't let you pick the trees ahead of time. you get what he decides to deliver (should've been the first red flag). then you have to pay 50% to place the order - 2nd red flag. but I went ahead ordered 7 trees from them; Autumn Blaze Maples, Colorado Spruce, Cleveland Pear, and this serviceberry. Only the cleveland pear and maybe 1 colorado was anything near "premium grade" whatever that's supposed to mean. the blaze maples look like they were hacked apart by deer when they were young - lots of clumpy, criss-crossing branching & multiple leaders, etc. the colorados have voids in their branching and were sheared excessively. then this serviceberry... i'll never buy anything from them again, and would advise anyone on here to avoid them at all costs. seriously, you can get better trees at Home Depot. |

| Yeah, hate to say it, but that is about gone, and doesn't look like its coming back. If the actual rootball is moist, I'd say its definitely some other problem. It's a shame that the nursery seems to be a scam outfit and won't stand behind their product. |
|
| Dug to order means that they are field grown and that means they can damage the roots in digging them. Same concept as B&B. Container grown trees, on the other hand, don't get their roots disturbed when they are sold - they've been growing in the pot all along. To me, dug to order/B&B is a riskier way to buy things (but still viable, just riskier). |

| I had a similar experience where i put a serviceberry in full, south sloping baking sun. The first summer it grew weakly, and then in the spring, big chunks of it started leafing out and then died. Maybe 1/4 or 1/3 looked ok. Rather than baby it and fight with whatever the problem was, I dug the thing up and moved it to my tree 'junkyard' (I have an east facing hillside with sub par soil that i don't really use - so i put stuff there that i dont want to kill outright). Anyway, now it has a bunch more shade and is doing REALLY well, although it doesn't fruit as heavily as sunny locations. Keep in mind I had PATCHY dieback - it doesn't APPEAR we have the same problem, but you could always move it elsewhere, maybe with more shade protection. |
|
| I live in Maryland and also have a serviceberry that is dying, though not quite as bad. I planted in late Fall 2010, it did well last year, and flowered nicely this Spring, but now has some significant die-back on 80% of the lower branches, whereas the crown looks healthy. What is particularly disturbing is pruned dieback branches are through and through dead AT THE CUT.-not even a hint of green. It's not in a southern exposure and has no water issues and was planted very well. (I've planted probably 30 trees) Can anyone comment? |
|
| hey I have delt with ohana farms before and they did a real nice job for me on evergreens and other trees - including serviceberry. they were really nice people, so i am surprised you have issues. did anyone remember there was and still is a DROUGHT? serviceberry need lots of water and go dormant if they don't get it - it will probably come back next year. instead of bashing the nursery maybe you should get the garden hose out! |

| And scolorado joined GW today just to tell us that. How nice. tj |
|
| Not sure what tsugajunkie implies with their comment as i've been an active user of garden web a long time. My point is that GW should not be used to knock individuals or businesses - suppossed to be a resource to solve problems, get info right? I dealt with the nursery in question and they had nice serviceberry and I liked dealing with them - seemed like the original poster was using GW to vent or pass blame on his bad luck with the plant. Serviceberry should be planted in part shade it is a woodland plant and transplants poorly into a full sun exposed site and they need lots of water until established. |

| scolorado you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. if anything the tree was overwatered. I checked it every day and had a certified arborist look at it twice. and GW is absolutely the right place share real experiences with a shady merchant. tsuga is right you are either a shill or your name is scott (the onwer of ohana farms). BTW - the last word from Ohana farms was that their warranty only covers the plant -- not delivery, not planting, not removal of the old plant --- despite the fact that I paid them delivery and planting fees for the original tree. checked my paperwork and of course none of this is in the terms & conditions. when I originally bought the tree he told me stories of how he replaced trees for unhappy customers even when the customer left the tree unwatered all year. what a liar. biggest scam ever. everyone here has been warned. |

| Anonymous reputation bashing, personal attacks, and now conspiracy theories. Sounds alot like CYBER BULLYING. a "shill" - really? I thought this was supposed to be about plants. This kind of thing is why I am so done with posting to forums like this one. |
