Type of tree, health, and watering

I just moved into a new house and have these nice trees in front of the house. I want to make sure they stay nice but I know nothing about them. Any idea what they are, why the interior looks dead or dying, and if not dead how much should I water it and how often?

Better, more informative shots needed. One on left is too far away, one on right nothing really useful is being clearly shown.

almost all conifers are bare or brown inside.. ITS NORMAL ... so sunlight to maintain green tissue ...

it been there.. and rather happy for a very long time.. dont try to kill it with too much love ....
