White satin birch tree

Hi,

I live in the St. Louis MO area and searching for a white birch single stem tree. I spent the last 6 months with little luck. I've learned more about birch trees than I ever thought possible. There are no nursery's in the entire state of MO selling white birch, but I have found residents of St. Louis who have Himalayan white birch. What a perfect tree. These residents have no clue where the tree came from. After studying about the river birch, Japanese birch, paper birch, yellow birch, crimson frost, whitespire, etc.....I finally came upon the white satin birch:

It seems to tolerate the heat and resistant to borers. I did find a few companies selling this tree in the northwest....but, no one will ship. Local nursery's tell me white birch cannot survive in this climate....but, I'd sure like to try. Any idea on how to acquire this tree....looking for single stem...maybe 12 feet in height.

hi tom ... welcome to GW ...

if no tree farm grows it in your area... and nurseries refuse to stock it... that should surely tell you all you need to know about it in your area ...

but that said.. you should ask a high end nursery to order one in for you from the left coast ..... with the understanding that you assume all risk.. and will waive any warranty from them ... in other words.. ask them to take your money with no risk on their part ...

i would suggest.. you go no bigger than a 6 foot transplant ... younger .. smaller plants.. take shipping.. transplant.. and re-establishment easier.. than extremely large trees... and a 12 footer is such.. in my world .... unless money is no object.. and you simply dont care if it dies ...

i have a list of about 100 trees/conifers I WANT!!! .. i dream of.. but they dont grow here.. some i have tried and killed... but the bottom line ...but for a very minor few is.. if they tell you it wont grow there.. BELIEVE THEM .... and set aside your dream plant.. and find something close enough.. that does grow there.. and go with that...

What about Dakota pinnacle birch or cutleaf weeping birch if you have the space - I assume you are enthralled with the bark and they are both lovely trees - one straight and narrow, the other graceful and weeping.
