What cultivar did you plant and what type of site is it in?!?!?

Most of the Crepes here were reduced to perennial status from shrubs. Even the big ten or fifteen foot tall pink ones which seemed established. My Dynamite never has impressed me as hardier than zone 7 if it is to be considered a shrub. I thought relocating it up by the house would help but not last winter!

Died back to the roots it did.

But ya know I needed kindling for the firepit anyway ;)

It was a noid from lowes. I'm guessing it was Muskogee judging from the flower last year.It's kind of close to the driveway. There's a big ash west of it about 50' that gives it good afternoon shade.

Most of the others I've seen in Montgomery City either died to the ground or had a few feet left on them.

I only paid about $5 for a gallon pot so if I lost it i wasn't worried. I always liked Dynamite but here's not much selection at the box stores. Not many nurseries in the rural areas to choose from either.

Few crApe myrtles will survive, long term, in zone 5. And, if the weather in your area is as weird as the weather has been here for the last few years, chances of survival might be even less. I'm also thinking that afternoon shade would not be a good thing, in this case.
