Brandy Wine Maple:

Hi, I just bought a brandy wine maple, from Earl May . They say it is a moderate growing tree. I am wondering how prone they are to splitting and breaking compared to other maples? The tag I have says this one is orange to red in color, but reading info on the Internet, they say these trees are purple/red in the fall. Breaking in wind is my real concern however. Thanks...

Supposed to be a red maple, so what red maples tend to do in your area is what to expect. Most of them grow quite large, but do not have the same problem with splitting that large silver maples are notorious for.

If the place you bought it at is a big box chain store the labeling may not be accurate.
