We have a patio that is west facing and we get brutalized by the sun in the evenings. We would like to plant a shade tree and were initially thinking a maple or a large tree.

The problem is we are close to the property line. I don't know what the rules are for the spread of the tree into neighbors property so I am wondering if a smaller tree would be a good option.
