Pagoda Dogwood/Golden Canker

Long time gardenweb lurker, first time poster. The massive snow we had in 2012 completely destroyed my beautiful pagoda dogwood. Unfortunately, this tree also had golden canker, and was undergoing treatment last summer and fall in an attempt to save it. My question is this - the tree has been removed, no infected material remains in the area, but do I need to be concerned about possible canker fungus remaining in the soil, or any concerns when selecting a new tree/species for this spot?

I probably won't get another pagoda - it was just too heartbreaking to lose this one. Am thinking maybe a serviceberry, but I do like the Kousa dogwood as well - but should I avoid dogwoods? Something 15-20' mature height,is good for this location. Right now, the location is full sun, but in a few years, it will be part shade - the snow last year also crushed some massive arborvitaes shading the area, but those are being replaced as well. Thanks in advance for any advice.
