I know there are at least a few nursery/greenhouse people on here. I need to block off some areas of grass and keep them bare of grass and weeds and round-up then mulch will be expensive. As it is I am keeping the mulch industry rich with all the trees etc. I want the thick felt looking stuff that is sometimes referred to as erosion control fabric. As the trees shade more area the Ajuga, Lamium or whatever will spread better, but until then I want it bare of Grass/weeds without mulching into the poorhouse. The average black porous weedblock is a joke here with my moms 12 cats digging and shredding it up. I've tried Ebay and they say professional weed block but you can't tell if it's the really good stuff. Hope someone can give me a source. Thanks

Why do you want it all cleared now?

i dont understand what you want.. weedblock UNDER mulch is an expensive joke. most weed seed is air borne .. and the minute.. in fact.. while you are laying it down.. seed is accumulating on top ... and then it grows thru the mat.. you cant pull them out.. the whole problem of digging thru it.. etc.. ad nauseum ... on the other hand.. nurseries use a product.. which lays on top of the soil ... and is more of a carpet ... and not buried ... when i think of things the pro's use ... i think of a.m.leonard ... amleo.com ... and call them ... they are willing to discuss your options .... be let me be very clear.. most hardcore gardeners.. have tried under mulch stuff.. and lived to regret it.. when they had to go back and rip it all out ... so please clarify what you are thinking about .. ken ps: on top of all that.. nurseries hire peeps to water 2 or 3 times a day.. to offset the effects of black carpeting.. it makes soil.. and pots really hot.. in sun.. and can have offsetting bad effects.. when transferred to home use ...

May I suggest a pure plastic tarp? Poaky, how long will you need it down? How large an area? I once used a tree stump and a month of laziness to kill some grass.

Go to a large local greenhouse and ask them where they get the stuff that they probably use on the floor of the greenhouse. The woven black plastic stuff used in most greenhouses (NOT felt looking at all) will last for quite a few years (MUCH longer than a normal black plastic tarp), will allow water and air penetration, and is pretty darn good at blocking weed growth (with reasonable maintenance and when dirt/mulch/etc is not allowed on top). It's what the pros use. I've had some installed in full sun for about eight years, and it's just beginning to break down in some spots. I would try to source it locally, because shipping would be considerably expensive for a decent sized roll. If you want earth staples that will last a while without rusting away before the fabric starts to wear, use the galvanized ones from Gardener's Supply (only place I've found that carries them). I don't have cats, so I'm not sure how this stuff would hold up to them (maybe not well).

The tarp would,nt let air and water through. I don't really NEED the area bare now, but wanted to have it bare with just the black weedblock until the trees cast enough shade for the shade loving groundcovers to spread fast. I guess I'm tired of taking 4 hours to cut grass. Thanks for helping me realize I don't really need the expense and it will heat the ground up. The good stuff is called erosion control fabric and is like felt. And is really expensive.

Shade won't help the groundcovers spread. It just cuts down on the competitive power of sun lovers like grass.
