Last I heard, the genus had been merged into Magnolia. Genetic analysis showed that the Michelia species are more closely related to Magnolia subgenus Magnolia, than the species of Magnolia subgenus Yulania are. So it meant either merging Michelia, or splitting off Yulania as a separate genus; they did the former as being the less disruptive to nomenclature.

I didnÂt know there are so many different kinds of magnolias. I thought they were mostly wiped out during the ice-age. The remaining ones were lucky to have survived.

It will be even better if they can describe the fragrance if a species has it. Judging by the picture, I like the following:

1. the deep red Magnolia insignis.
