Multigraft Asian pear tree on ohxf333 rootstock

Hi guys,

New to the site. Does anybody have experience with 4 in 1 pear trees or grafts in general?

I planted a bareroot 4 in 1 asian pear to start the season, and it seems to be doing well. It was grafted on a OHXF333 rootstock, which has now got it's own branch starting towards the top of the tree. Should I remove the bud or can I hope for a 5 in 1?

You need to remove any growth from below the graft union, it can overtake the grafted top.

Leaving the OHxF333 shoot will rob even more vigor (OHxF333 is already a dwarfing rootstock) from the grafted scions. It's possible that it could outgrow the grafts to the point that it would shade them out or otherwise case their loss, but plenty of pear trees are top worked (so yes, you can have more than four cultivars on the same tree including top growth from the rootstock). One big question is why you would want to do this, since OHxF333 was bred as a rootstock and not for it's edible fruit quality. If it were mine, I'd remove all growth from the OHxF333.

hi

welcome..

there is a fruit forum.. and those fruit peeps do a lot of things differently than tree peeps ... you might want to check in there ... though in this case.. i doubt you will get a different answer ...

i had .. key word there.. a 5 in 1 pear tree ... it was a pruning nightmare due to the multiple grafts.. they did not flower at the same time .. so fruit was sparse ... and eventually it got so ugly.. and mal-formed.. and no usable fruit after 8 years invested.. that i got rid of it ..

enjoy the heck out of your little freak of nature.. i wish you all the luck in the world with it.. but do NOT invest a lot of emotional baggage in it.. and prepare for its demise.. whenever that may be ...

good luck

ken

You guys are awesome! I really appreciate the feedback. I've removed the shoot and hopefully my little freak of nature will do well out here in sunny Las Vegas.
