Prunus cerasifera training

I planted two purple leaf plum trees in spring. They're well established and are growing at a very healthy and fast rate. But all the growth is very vertical with acute branching angles. I would like to prune or train the trees so that they grow to more of an open center tree with wider branching. How do i do this.

well..

provide us a picture.. and we make suggestions????

most of us would suggest no canopy reduction.. for the first year or two.. until the plant is fully established ...

check the link ... one would presume this is its natural shape.. i really dont understand what you want to do with it ... but my gut tells me.. you are treating a tree .. like a perennial.. and wanting/expecting things to happen fast ... and with trees .. nothing is fast ...

how about a pic.. and we can go from there ...

all that said.. they are your trees.. knock yourself out on them.. if you just have to do something ...

Here is a link that might be useful: link
