New Growth Damage:

Previously I asked what could be making cuts in the lower sides of the bark on my young oak and fruit trees. Many split and dyed, even broke off. We had the plague of the 17 yr Cicadas this June. Radio said they hurt nothing. Now others are saying the damage on my trees was from them. Supposedly the females lay their eggs under the bark. The larvae break out ,fall to the ground, burrow down and feed on roots. Does anyone know if this Cicada damage is true? If so should I treat now the ground around my trees to stop root damage? Thanks.
