Hi this weekend big box store had 50% off trees. I purchased a tree I never seen before. It had no labels just a sticker on pot that said patio tree. Tree is a weeper with heart shaped leaves that are deep red almost purple. For $25 I took a chance it is winter hardy for NY.

Sounds like a weeping redbud, Cercis canadensis.

Depends on where in NY you are - NYC should have no problem w/hardiness. The southern half, approximately, of NY State should be OK for most Cercis, unless higher elevation. North of there could be problematic.

NY can be anything from zone 3b in some isolated high elevation areas in the NE part of the state, to 7b on Long Island!
