I have a pin oak in the front of my house which is located on a busy street.
The tree has problems, but this is new.
Thanks! |

It may just be how the pictures shows up on here, but it doesn't look like any canker I've ever seen. It looks more like someone filled a wound with epoxy. The surface looks very smooth and almost glassy.

Well, Prunus, for one, make "goo" -- gelatinous, sticky gum/resin from the tree. Pines make pitch. But I don't think I've ever seen an oak make a resin/gum. Are you sure it IS coming from the tree and not something someone stuck there?

I've seen hypoxylon canker of oak in a gooey, runny stage like this. The image looks like it's bigger than it really is. I think if we could see a better picture it might be easier to tell.

Slime flux? I had a q. rubra that had Sl Flux that was kinda clear and sticky looking. Bacterial wetwood?

Well, that's good to know ... just because I haven't seen it doesn't mean it doesn't happen! ;-)

Yes, a picture that showed the scale of what we are seeing would help. I have seen fungal fruiting bodies of a type that resemble this-a kind of smooth, brownish velvety appearance. Species I don't recall at the moment. It does look like a canker, except for this stuff! A sunken area where cambial tissue has been killed by some pathogen. Still, I isn't sure. +oM

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but we are about 900 short, lol. Is this stuff hard, gooey, wet, sticky? How large is the area impacted. It always helps if the OP can provide as much background as possible, including geographic area.
RE: What is this?

Is the OP's tree okay? My Q Rubra is fine after it's Slime Flux incedent. It went away by itself. Alrighty-then.
