Crabapple with non-crabapple branch

We bought two crabapples last year from a well respected local nursery. They are doing wonderfully, but I noticed a branch growing off that was not crabapple. It looked more like a maple. We chopped it off because it was growing like crazy and we thought it would be taking away nutrients from the crabapple. Is this fairly normal?

crabs are Malus

maples are Acer ..

malus most likely is not grafted onto acer .. [too lazy to look it up]

but not all malus.. have the same leaf shape.. see link ...

and i hope you pruned it off properly.. rather than chopped it off .. kimosabi ...

it should be apparent .. that the growth came from below the graft

Doubt it was Maple, but if your tree is grafted, you did the right thing. Crabapple leaves can vary. Some are rounded and some are divided, sometimes on the same tree. If the branch was coming off the main stem near the bottom, could be a sprout from the rootstock. If it was coming off another branch away from the ground level, it was just a branch with different leaves. In this case, the worst that can happen are watersprouts.

Do you know the name of your trees?

There are crab cultivars with very maple-like leaves. Golden Raindrops, for instance.

They are both malus "snowdrift".

I'm not sure whether I properly pruned it. It was cut flush with the trunk.

Also, ken, did you mean "kamikaze"? Kemosabe means a trusted friend. I think you meant to imply that I was causing my tree to kill itself.

We have lots of new growth on the trees and they all look similar to the leaves that were already there. This was one branch, directly attached to the trunk and one of the lowest branches.

Thanks all!
