Powdery Mildew?

Hi guys.

I have a large oak in my backyard and there is a lot of white mildew looking stuff coating the leaves. I looked it up and it appears to be powdery mildew. The genius of the interwebs says not to do anything, however, it is getting worse. The whole tree's leaves are covered in it. The whole area under the tree is now speckled with the cast off mildew because there is so much in the tree.

Should I do anything?

never heard of mildew casting off ...

and the leaves look speckled.. look on the back.. any sign of small sucking bugs.. like spider mites??? .. see link

mildew is a surface problem.. and usually can not be cured.. but mostly prevented.. hence the suggestion that there is nothing to do.. it has to do with hot muggy nights that encourage mildew ...

but it is never cast off.. as far as i know ...

can we see a pic of the whole .... and the litter below ... i am curious now ..

I'm usually proven wrong, but it looks like whitefly webbing. A really bad case.

I will follow up tonight with pics of the whole tree as well as I can. It is 30' tall and surrounded with other types of smaller trees that seem to be unaffected.

Where do you live? That can help in the diagnosis.
Has it happened before?
What's your weather been like?

Thanks!

I live in Bryan, TX
I have not seen it before
For several years the weather was extremely dry
About 6 months ago we leveled out to usual rainfall
The past 3 weeks have been overly wet

Perhaps all the rain is what it causing the castoff.

I could be wrong too but it doesn't look quite like Powdery Mildew. Usually you see a thicker coating on the surface and the leaves will be puckering and be distorted.

Could it be a severe infestation of spider mites? Powdery mildew does not get those webs.

Here are some more pictures. I'm thinking one of these, but I can't find any of them on the leaves.

Spider Mites
Whiteflies
Mealy Bugs

Thanks for the help everyone!

For heavens' sake....contact your local extension office. Send them a picture and you'll probably be able to get some good local assistance.

Yeah, that is a severe spider mite infestation. I might be inclined to use a miticide, it's so bad.
After you talk to your local extension person, consider throwing a hose end sprinkler up into that tree and turning it on every day for a while. Mites usually hate water.

Stucco, have you been able to identify this? I have exactly the same thing on a large post oak here in College Station but I cannot seem to find anyone that can identify what it is. Have a call in to Ag Extension for Brazos County.
