Pruning down birch trees into one trunk

I have two birch trees that were planted too close together and too close to the house. Each tree has one large trunk that is at least twice as big around as the other trunks coming up. The large trunks are also nearly vertical as well. Would it hurt the trees too much to cut off all smaller trunks around these large trunks?
