Cornus Kousa cutting- when to plant outside?

Hello Forum,

I have a cornus kousa cutting that is showing some signs it may have rooted. Still no new leaves but the plant has been in the rooting medium for six weeks, looks healthy and is angling towards the light.

The question I have is when should I plant it out. It may be a few more weeks before the roots are strong enough, and by then autumn may not be that far off. I worry about it not having enough time to harden off before winter.

Should I just keep it indoors over the winter and plant it out next spring?

i definitely would NOT plant it in july or august...

though i might pot it.. and put it in full shade until then.. IF I KNEW THERE WERE ACTUALLY SOME ROOTS ON IT ...

as to winter ... do you have any rose cones .. i might be tempted to plant it in the ground ... IN MY Z5 ... in sept.. and then cover it for winter in late nov ...

in my experience.. in my z5 ... its all about.. GET IT DORMANT.. and KEEP IT DORMANT.. and the issue is those mid winter thaws.. that kill small plants .. and the cone .. tempers all the temp swings ...

one thing for sure.. its a tree and not a houseplant.. and odds would be very high.. that i would kill it.. trying to 'save' it.. as a houseplant ...

in the alternative.. repot it in fall.. and then let it go dormant naturally ... and put it in a structure.. like an unheated garage or barn ... [which also tempers the pot] .. and in winter.. put a snowball or ice cube on it once in a while.. so the media doesnt go bone dry ...

there you go.. a lot of typing.. and no direct answer.. lol

I guess it'll depend on when I know it has roots. So that may take a little while yet.

generally.. with cut sticks.. if you GENTLY pull on it.. if there are no roots.. it will slip right out .. and you stick it right back in ...

if there are roots .. there will be resistance.. and a puffing of the media ... indicating something is holding it in..

and if you pull too hard.. you will be back to a stick w/o roots.. lol
