I have pretty good luck bare rooting small tangled up trees using water as the dirt removal tool.

I work with one. They are messy and noisy. We have hard clay soil which has to be moistened before it works right. It is mostly used for trees and some irrigation lines in tree root systems. I'd say you would not need to use one for anything smaller that about 4 in. cal. It would probably tear a small tree root system up.

I've used them and they work great in sandy soil.
