This tree is so cool. Can they be grown in Michigan? If so anyone know where I can get one?

i have Fagus sylvatica 'Riversii' .. but apparently no picture ... link to google images below

since 2000 ... here in Adrian MI ....

call gee tree farm and see if they have it.. or any of the other purple beech .... google for website and phone ...

they are north of Jackson ... YOU HAVE TO VISIT THERM AT LEAST ONCE .... take the checkbook .. and when you get there.. have one of the motorized salespeople take you down the road to their own arboretum ... set aside at least 5 hours plus drive time ...

Yes. And Julie got hers from ForestFarm (.com) thanks to Quercus Quercus suggesting that she get one in memorium of that old purple beech that was cut down for development in her neighborhood.

Does Julie have all of those trees on her website in her yard?

If so it has given me a bit of inspiration. What I mean is I was considering putting up a privacy fence along my back fence but now I'm thinking there may be some interesting small trees I could plant back there instead. I already have a Large Honey Locust in off center in my back yard...So I'm thinking two or three smaller trees would be great! Any ideas

Yeah the site is inspiring to say the least. You can see which of the trees are in her yard by clicking on the link the "Julies trees" then click on the map of the back yard or by reading the description there.

Not all European beech trees are purple--that is just one kind of cultivar. If you want to see a really nice European beech, go to the Biltmore estate outside Asheville, NC. Go into the garden area, which I think is to the southwest of the house, and in the center of a grassy area there is a beech tree to top all beech trees. It is, I am almost sure, a European beech, and the trunk is so big and thick it looks like a veritable wall looming up over you. I won't give a diameter estimate because it has been about 8 years since I was there, but if you get a chance to see this tree and are a beech tree lover, it will be #1 on your all time list.

In DC, a tree that large would have required a permit for
removal. 35$/inch circumference. Fines are much
larger if you cut one without a permit and get caught.
