Ear Trees dropping leaves in July???

I've got 2 Ear Trees rooted and potted. They're about 3-4 feet tall, just since rooted in April. And suddenly - over night -all the leaves fell off the shorter one, and a few fell off the taller one. I happened to put about a tablespoon of 6-6-6 fertilizer on top of the soil in each pot, and it rained heavily that night. Within the next day or so is when the leaf drop happened. Could that fertilizer have caused the leaf drop? Other than that, they have been growing rapidly. Any ideas what might have happened? And will the denuded one come back?

yes.. the fert could have done it ...

you dont say how big the pot is .. nor if it is time release fert ... but a tablespoon of fert in a one gallon or smaller pot.. is a lot ... to my usage anyway ...

a fast dump of fert MIGHT burn roots ... meaning the rain washed it in too fast ...

can a tree releaf.. yeah.. usually ... depending on how the roots were affected ...

can you see any dormant buds??? growth tips.. etc ...

if they were growing gangbusters.. why did you think they needed food????

will it recover.. only time will tell ...

That is ALLOT of fertilizer for a potted plant, and I bet it's a small pot at that. Compound that with it's not SLOW release fertilizer, then it would be a pretty good bet that it was the fertilizer.

Recovery, as Ken said.

Thanks, Ken and Arktrees,

Guess it wasn't just the fertilizer, it was my dumb use of it! Yes, the one that lost nearly all the leaves has good green growth at the top, two new branches sprouting and full of small leaves. The other, taller one, only lost leaves on one or two branches, so it looks pretty good. By the way, the pots are about 2 gallon pots. And the fert was lawn fertilizer, which we use on all our Seloums a couple times a year, and I had in my hand after doing the Seloums. Lesson learned!

What's an Ear Tree?

Ghostlyvision,

An Ear Tree produces seed pods loosely resembling an ear, hence the name. Scientific name: Enterolobium cyclocarpum. Deciduous, large crown, great for large areas here in south Florida. Here's a link to the University of Florida Okeechobee County Extension Service with an article on Ear Trees, complete with images: http://okeechobee.ifas.ufl.edu/News columns/Enterolobium.Ear.Tree.ht m
