I have trouble w/the red oaks but I'd guess probably Quercus velutina - Black Oak. Might also be a northern Red, Q. rubra.

How about a shumard?

Looks closest to black oak. Trunk bark is the giveaway -- many large specimens near here in the forest. That does not look like a northern red (or scarlet) oak trunk & lower bark -- too blackish.

Edit: Still could be a shumard. Don't have any experience w/big shumard trunks.

I don't know which it is but what a great oak! Is that dying branch the oak's? Can't tell from the sideways pic.

I was also thinking black oak when I saw this topic earlier, but I don't have enough experience with them to be confident (unlike beng!)

ghostlyvision, you asked about the dying branch. We have tons of trees on a strip between Bridgeton and here with branch damage from a tornado this year. I suspect this is another.

Would acorns help narrow it down? There is a playground nearby so I won't have problems getting by that way in a month or so.

Quercus Velutina, Black oak (northern) is said to have orange in it's bark cracks or creases. Hope that helps. My Q. Velutina is young and I haven't had luck spotting orange in the creases yet. If it is close-by, I would check in fall, what the leaves do, or don't do. Q. Velutina is drab in fall. My oaks are too young for me to say much about the bark, comparing to my oaks in color etc

Are the pics taken from your phone and then uploaded to PB straight away? If you tilt your phone over and auto rotate is turned on then the rotation info is included with the pic and PB sees it as not tilted over! I use PicSay photo editor (free) which scrubs such info.
