Fringe tree growth spurt......?

I had always heard that fringe trees grew very slowly. I planted one a few years ago. It was rather tiny. I bought it from an "all indigenous" nursery (ie, they only sell plants/trees that are "native" to the US) so I am relatively sure that it is Chionanthus virginicus (as opposed to an Chinese fringe.

Anyway, I got some flowers early this year (I was extremely excited, because this is the first year I got them :-D )

I just got back from vacation and noticed that there are limbs shooting up...at lest 4 or 5 feet. they aren't coming from the ground, but rather mid tree, and going straight up.

Is this normal? I thought fringe trees were supposed to be notoriously slow growing.

It's normal as far as what I experienced with mine.
I just let them go and now I have a large mound after a few years. It's about 12 ft tall.
It's one of the last trees to leaf out in my garden. Some people think it's dead when all the other deciduous trees are green. I almost took it out because of that. Still might.

you can confirm the Id.. by posting pix of the leaves.. and the bark ...

what you are seeing.. is that your tree is now FULLY ESTABLISHED....

prior.. it was doing a vast majority of its work growing a root mass.. to go crazy.. apparently it did.. lol ...

at this point.. it should be rather carefree... and in my yard.. would officially be free range.. on its own.. as it has gotten over.. whatever i did to it.. while planting it ... no water.. no fert. and no more mulch .. except to make the bed pretty ...

its no longer the babe you bought.. it is now a TREE ... treat it as such ...

Ok, great. I was just worried that it had some malady. LOL.

suzabad, I see you haven't posted anything in almost a year. Is everything OK? You've been such a huge help in the mini-rose department that I think more roses than you know owe their flourishing lives to you. I'd love to see you start posting again! thank you for all of your great advice.
