Pine sawflies!
They hit one of my little pitch pines last year, and nearly defoliated it, not once but twice, The needles recovered the first time and then we went into winter. This spring it was back in all its glory until a week ago.
I've been scouting on this tree and spot treated one branch, but the mate has found another branch with tiny larvae on it, and I've declared all-out war. I have a bee colony, so I can count on one hand the times I have ever used a pesticide outside. Once for azalea lace bugs and once for euonymous scale and only used oil. Even though I carried a pesticide ap license for twenty years, I don't even own a tank sprayer anymore. That is until yesterday. Between the diplodia on the Austrian pines and the sawfly on the pitch pines I'm about to spit. Those suckers blend right in with the needles and can ruin a tree in a matter of days. Now for a shower, I smell like chemicals.
