Thanks, all! Really appreciate the ID help and the info about planting. Ken, I'm in Southern California -- is there a time you would recommend transplanting it? I'd leave it but it picked a pot that already has a little palm tree in it (though I suppose I could move the palm tree instead, but don't know if that would be any improvement).

I'd ask for a recommendation from a experienced southern CA gardener - rather than a rampant hosta-phile from the Great White North. Some things just don't transplant well...

With proper care (watering, maybe some shading, good site prep) you should be able to put that little Fig right in the ground.

As no one else mentioned it: Maple species will have opposite arrangement of foliage, whereas your Fig should have alternate arrangement of simple leaves. Shape of the leaf should almost never be your first clue on plant ID.

Would like to add... that if your tree has no root issues, then April, May, June, July, Aug, Sept, Oct, Nov, ...Dec
is NOT the wrong time to plant. Those in the extreme south..who have experience...please accept my apologies

Edit please...Dec, Nov,...possibley latter half Oct., not recommended in colder climates....Can't vouch for July, Aug in the heat of the south....

Now maybe in desert Southern California (over 100úF days -- like Bakersfield, etc.) it might be better to wait until Fall. Hopefully someone from your region will respond.
