Ken I agree. My neighbor's Tulip is at least as fast growing as my metasequoia but my metasequoia has it in trunk girth.

Ya know, I get some GREAT growth from ash and walnut volunteers which I mow down. Probably because I don't trim as often as I should. Any chance it has been getting mowed down every year for the last decade and just has a great set of roots now?

Oh yeah, I have a thread going where several of us are watching our nyssa sylvaticas turn back into trees after dying back that first winter in the ground. I bet you do just fine.

no tree is killed by cutting it to the ground ... and i said tree .. not conifer ... which is a tree.. but not what i said .. crikey ...

I just can't see it growing that thick from seed like you say. Maybe if it was mowed down previously.
