This is an Elizabeth Magnolia about 5 years old. The problem is entire branches seem to be dying off quickly. I thought it might be spider mites and sprayed avid, but I didn't see any evidence of mites. Any ideas what this could be? Is it insects? fungal?
Follow-Up Postings:

Probably bacterial blight. I'm having the same kind of problem with a couple other kinds on one of the sites I garden. Same property has a history of dying back and failures of some kinds of maples. I am sure this was bacterial blight. There was, however also a problem a few years ago at a local nursery with stock of one of the yellow magnolia cultivars being infested with borers.

The way its acting, I can believe borors easily. What can I use to control borers?
|
Nothing, until you establish if it's borers. You didn't help your tree by treating it with Avid if it didn't have mites, and they are easily identifiable. Treat if you must, but wait until you identify what is causing the damage. A borer treatment won't do a thing for a bacterial issue.
