dead Katsura?

The leaves of my 3" caliber Katsura, planted in 2010, have gone almost completely brown, in spite of regular watering. Should I consider it a goner, and save my precious water for other trees? Ran my well dry 2 weeks ago and have to be very conservative with water nowadays. What are your thoughts? Thanks.

They abhor drought! Depending on how dry it still is for you, triage may be a better idea.

many trees can and do releaf.. once drought breaks ... i would continue watering.. as best you can.. thru fall.. and give it winter.. and see if it recovers in spring ... hope springs eternal as they say ... that said.. i never had one.. but i would still be hopeful ... of course.. i have some dead conifers that have been standing out there for 4 years ... and i think i have gone beyond hopeful.. to downright lazy .. lol .. ken

Thanks for offering some hope, Smivies and Ken. I just dumped 5 gallons of dirty dish water around the drip line. It just may have to be the sole recipient of this precious gray water I'm saving.

Something else must be going on if you are watering deeply on a weekly basis if mother nature isn't providing otherwise. If you scratch the bark is it still green? Mine are b&b last year and doing fine even with their non-established root systems and full canopies.

Thanks for your input whaas. I am actually afraid to do the scratch test, but if I muster up the courage I will report back the results. This Katsura has been stressed since early spring, when we had temps in the 80s followed by frost. The leaves never did turn green this year. They came in pink and promptly turned orange and stayed orange for months until going brown.

I don't have one of these, but I visited a friend in Chicago earlier this summer who has a nice specimen. He was lamenting its intolerance of dry conditions and added this gem: "I don't even like to see someone with a dry sense of humor get too close to it."

Perhaps I've spent too much time close to this tree...lol! I did the scratch test and the inner bark is still green, and we just got a nice ground soak over the weekend, so perhaps there is hope. Not sure at this point how I feel about this tree. I prefer tough plants and trees that show a little more resilience in stressful conditions such as these.
