Found this whilst perusing the David Shaw arboretum in Holmdel Park, Monmouth County, NJ. It looks like the place might have been nice at some point in the past but fairly unkempt now. Anyhow, what is this tree?

Sure looks like a hickory nut of some sort.

Possibly some kind of Tilia? Maybe Large-leaved Linden/Lime, T. platyphyllos. Did you see any kind of bract attached to the stem that holds the fruit? Also, how large is the fruit? The photo makes it look rather large, but perspective in photos can be deceiving.

The fruit was about the size of a nickel to a quarter. I didn't see the flower bracts seen on tillia although it did have a moderate suckering problem.

My guess would be davidia or dove tree. I'm not 100% sure, I've only seen them a couple times, but it's got leaves like that and similar fruits.

I'm pretty sure it's a Davidia involucrata. I have one. It is also known as a Dove Tree or Hankerchief Tree. Strange blooms. Here it is. Mike

It took about 15 years before it bloomed. Not for instant gratification! Mike |
