Dynamite Crape Myrtle being phased out?

Has anyone heard anything about this? I was told at Armstrong nursery in Pasadena that suppliers aren't growing them any more, especially the single trunk types, because their mildew resistance is so poor. Between them and San Gabriel nursery, that's 2 big nurseries in southern California that can't get them. I'm thinking maybe I should just go with Arapaho for red color...?

or I should have said at least phased out in the Los Angeles area...can't speak for other areas obviously.

Markces I was hoping someone from So Cal would respond...all I can tell you is that I have about a dozen of them here in Sonoma County with no mildew whatsoever. My Rosa banksia 'Lutea' gets powdery mildew every summer, so we have the problem here, but Dynamite is fine. I have about 5-6 other varieties of crapes and D is my favorite - mostly due to the foliage. Am waiting to see what the bark on older specimens looks like - my oldest has only been in the ground for 3-4 years. Is the Arapaho really red? A lot of the ones listed as 'red' (Centennial Spirit, Cherokee) to my eye are PINK! You could try calling Monrovia and see if anyone will talk to you. If I learn more from any nursery folks up here I'll update.

Ok, that is good to hear, thank you...I have to keep in mind that was only one person's opinion, no one else I've talked to, or my own research has said anything to corroborate what he said.

Oddly enough I went back to San Gabriel nursery and they had 2 five gallon Dynamites. I really wanted the true red color, so I decided to take the risk and got one. I'd agree with you- Arapaho isn't a true red, it definitely has a pinkish/magenta tone.

I just bought 2 Dynamites and planted them. None of the ones in the nursery had any disease on them, and it's been pretty rainy here, and is just about always humid. I've been looking for a good red, too, and am glad I found them!

Here's a link from Texas A&M Hort, it has info about most crape varieties, including mildew resistance.

They rate Dynamite as "Good", so I have to question what you heard.

mark,
Can tell you a thing about Dynamite and phasing out etc., other than it was developed in a humid part of the country, and so I would think Mildew would not be a problem, otherwise it would have been selected out.

However the reason for my posting, was your statement of wanting a RED selection, Have you looked into Siren Red (see link, the picture in the link does not show the true DEEP red). I have seen these in person, and they are the darkest Red CM I have seen, Perhaps these will fit your needs better.

Arktrees that flower color is fabulous - even if photo doesn't show depth of color it is not pink in the least. What is the foliage like?

F&F
Foliage starts our a red color and then fades to a green. Pretty colorful. Supposed to have good fall color as well, though I have not seen that. I have only seen small plants with a few flowers, and they were very dark red. If you look at the pictures on Daves site, the very first pic is a good much for the flower color I have seen on them. One thing to be aware of, is these are supposedly slower growing than many other selections. I don't have any hands on experience to know. We don't have any Crapes, but I educated myself on them when my female counterpart was considering them. My conditions were NO PINK, and NO WHITE! So I looked for the best Red I could find, and Red Siren was a very strong possibility. In the end, she choose other plants.

Forgot to add, it supposed very disease resistant as well.

I will look for it. I dislike pink and lavender, and despite L. 'Natchez' great bark, the spent flowers on them (as with a lot of white flowers) yield a dirty effect. So I have settled for the deepest hottest pink I could find until Dynamite came along and I converted to those (we have a ranch business and use cms for lining the roads/pens/etc as we are summer dry and the dramatic flowering in August/Sept when we are brownest and dustiest is desirable). I'll see if I can find Siren Red locally. Slow growing is not great for my situation, but there is enough else going on and already established that it would be ok!
Thanks very much!

Check out the link below. They have about very Crape you could want, along with excellent information. You can ship numbers relatively cheaply.

Siren Red is nice too, but a smaller tree than Dynamite- Monrovia's site says Red Rocket only gets to 6-12 feet tall and 5 feet wide- that could be a good choice depending on the size you're looking for, but I really needed something bigger (I wanted something that would provide some nice shade and at an eventual 15-20' tall, 10-15' wide, Dynamite was a better choice for me).

I considered Red Rocket too, but that variety seems even harder to find than Dynamite in my area (no one I talked to had ever seen it), and the difference between the 2 seems pretty minimal to me.

Anyway, I planted my Dynamite today, so we'll see how it goes. I'm starting to think the guy at Armstrong that said all that stuff in my first post may have been confused or something.

Arktrees - that nursery looks like a great source of crapes. I like to support my local folks whenever possible (we abound in independently-owned nurseries in this area) so I am going to try to find Siren Red here - will go to mail-order if not available. Many times the locals will order in specially if they can find the supplier. In any case, I bookmarked the site for reference purposes.

Markces - let us know how your Dynamite does!

I love Siren but very hard to find. One of the local nurseries had some a few of years ago but haven't seen it since. I have been able to grow it from seed after trying for two years. Growth is indeed slow compare to the others I've grown but the leaves are a nice red which I like.
